Two phones, both stamped with the words fast wireless charging: a Chinese flagship hits 80W, an iPhone on a Qi2.2 pad tops out at 25W. That is more than a threefold gap. Yet set that same 80W phone on somebody else's wireless charger and it drops straight back to the mid-teens. This is not a story about one product being better built than the other. Over the past two years wireless charging has genuinely split into two tracks: one chasing peak wattage, the other chasing universality.
Q: Why can domestic phones go all the way to 80W? A: Because the rules made room first. In May 2023 China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the Interim Provisions on Radio Management of Wireless Charging (Power Transfer) Devices, document MIIT Wireless No. 62 of 2023. It confines mobile and portable wireless charging devices to three frequency bands, 100-148.5 kHz, 6765-6795 kHz and 13553-13567 kHz, with rated transfer power capped at 80W. The provisions took effect on 1 September 2024. What makes it interesting is that the draft set the ceiling at 50W and the final text raised it to 80W. Hu Wei, who heads the radio equipment division at MIIT's Radio Regulation Bureau, said the higher figure was chosen because it leaves room for the industry to grow without causing harmful interference to existing radio services. Domestic flagships have been climbing toward that line ever since.
Q: So why is Qi2.2 stuck at 25W? A: A standards body and a single manufacturer worry about completely different things. The Wireless Power Consortium released Qi2.2 in December 2024, lifting the magnetic fast-charging ceiling from 15W to 25W, a 67% jump, and for the first time in Qi's decade-plus history the consortium called its own standard truly high-speed wireless charging. The increase sounds modest, but the standard has to guarantee that any certified phone placed on any certified pad behaves safely, while also policing temperature rise, foreign object detection and magnetic alignment tolerance. Layer those safeguards on and wattage simply cannot sprint the way a proprietary protocol does. A brand tuning for its own battery curve and thermal layout has freedom the standard will never have.
Q: Why does a third-party pad slow everything down? A: Because the top power tier is unlocked by a proprietary handshake. The phone and its first-party dock run a private identification and power-negotiation routine, and only once they recognise each other does the high tier open up. Put the phone on a pad without that routine and both sides fall back to the public lane, meaning 5W or 15W under Qi, or 25W under Qi2.2. Decide what you actually want before you buy. Chasing the peak number means living with the first-party dock. If what you want is to drop the phone down and have one pad feed every device in the house, a certified magnetic charger is far less trouble.
Q: What is actually inside those 637 Qi2.2-certified products? A: Overwhelmingly accessories, not phones. WPC certification data compiled by Chongdiantou puts the cumulative total at 637 products as of the end of February 2026. The pace is worth studying: 30 products in July 2025, the standard's first month on the market; around 70 a month by that December; then a record 181 new certifications in January 2026 alone, followed by another 116 in February. The category split says even more. Multi-device chargers lead with 229 products, or 35.95% of the total, ahead of 120 desktop pads, 111 power banks and 95 car mounts, while phones account for just 15. Accessories are running ahead of handsets, and that is what separates this standard cycle from earlier ones. The 3-in-1 wireless charger, feeding phone, watch and earbuds at once, has become the mainstream shape of the Qi2.2 ecosystem.
Q: Does any one brand dominate the list? A: No, the field is unusually fragmented. Loowoko leads with 22 certified products, followed by Belkin with 19 and Spigen with 18; Samsung has 16, Apple 13, UGREEN and KOAKUMA 12 each, and AUKEY 10. Handset giants, established accessory names and newcomers all sit on the same table, and nobody holds more than roughly 4%. For factories doing design, customisation, manufacturing and sales, that fragmentation is a signal in itself. Plenty of peers have already proven the Qi2.2 barrier is crossable, yet the brand slots are nowhere near filled.
Q: How should an ordinary buyer choose? A: Three rules of thumb cover it. If your phone has native magnets under the MPP profile, a Qi2.2-certified magnetic charger will hold 25W and you never have to aim it. If your phone advertises 50W or more over a proprietary link, keep the first-party dock for the times you are in a hurry and use a standard pad for everyday desk-side topping up. For homes, hotels and meeting rooms, the bulk-deployment scenarios, stability and foreign object detection matter far more than peak wattage, so check the certification mark unit by unit. And one thing people routinely miss: the 80W in a marketing headline and the rated transfer power written into the regulation are not measured the same way, so never buy on the biggest number in the spec sheet alone.
