On September 9, Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. With a folding body, a grade-5 titanium frame and batteries split across both halves, plenty of people immediately wondered whether the phone could still keep MagSafe, or whether wireless charging had been dropped to save thickness. According to Apple's published specifications, the iPhone Duo supports both MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging at up to 25W. With a 35W-or-higher adapter paired to a MagSafe or Qi2 charger, it reaches 50 percent in roughly 30 minutes. Wired charging over USB-C hits 50 percent in about 20 minutes, provided the cable and adapter are rated for 60W or more. Wireless is about ten minutes slower, which is more than enough for everyday use.
To accommodate the folding structure, Apple did not force in one oversized battery. Instead it placed a high-energy battery on each half and lets the chip manage them together as a single system. Apple rates up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer screen, or about 24 hours per charge when both displays are used evenly. The A20 Pro chip and a custom vapor chamber carry the load on both power and heat.
The accessories confirm that the magnets are here to stay. Both the iPhone Duo Case, in sand and navy blue, and the Folio with Kickstand, in navy blue and taupe, have built-in magnets. Apple states explicitly that they work with MagSafe chargers, 25W Qi2 chargers and Qi-certified chargers. You do not have to remove the case to charge, and the magnets still align precisely with the phone.
A few details are worth noting. To reach the full 25W wireless speed, the adapter needs to be at least 35W to begin with, and there is still no charger in the box, so you supply your own. A foldable also carries its weight differently from a slab phone, which means magnet strength and heat control are exactly the areas magnetic wireless charging has to re-prove on this form factor.
In a desk setting, this kind of phone pairs naturally with a charging setup that can both stand and lie flat.
